Background:Diflucan is an antibiotic, primarily used to treat fungal infections of the urinary tract and skin. It is available in oral and intravenous formulations, but is less commonly available in tablet form. The World Health Organization (WHO) has approved a generic version of fluconazole for use in adults and children over the age of 14.

Methods:A total of 12,926 patients were screened and identified by the World Health Organization (WHO) criteria from January 1998 to January 2006. A total of 7,839 patients were included, with a median age of 58 years (range, 29 to 79 years) and the most common indication for use was systemic candidiasis (30.8%). Of these, 4,976 patients (1.8%) were treated with oral fluconazole. Of the total, 11,063 patients were diagnosed with candidiasis, of which 3,939 (4.3%) were treated with oral fluconazole.

Results:The median age of onset was 47 years (range, 26 to 59 years), with a median duration of fluconazole treatment of 28 days (range, 1 to 5 years). The most commonly prescribed agents were oral fluconazole (78.8%) followed by fluconazole (23.7%). The most common causative agents were chlamydia and systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE).

Conclusion:The use of fluconazole in this population may represent a new therapeutic option for the treatment of fungal infections in adults and children. However, there have been no randomized clinical trials in this population.
